The Generative Era marks a transformative period in design, driven by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence technologies. The course will introduce key concepts forming the foundation of this new era, including Artificial Intelligence (both narrow and general), Machine Learning, Generative AI, Large Language Models, and Natural Language Processing, among others.

The functionality of Large Language Models, which power many of today's AI applications, will be explored. The critical skill of prompt engineering—effectively communicating with AI systems to achieve desired outcomes—will also be discussed. This comprehensive introduction aims to equip participants with the knowledge and understanding necessary to navigate and leverage the potential of AI in their work.

fairer AI, an introduction ethics and justice

An introduction to ethics and justice explores AI-driven design's ethical and technical challenges, covering crucial topics. Participants will gain a deep understanding of bias, including algorithmic bias, and its impact on AI systems. The course delves into the “Black Box Phenomenon," highlighting the unpredictable nature of AI evolution and its challenges. It introduces concepts of interpretability and explainability in AI, emphasizing their importance in understanding and communicating AI decision-making processes. The program also examines the dynamics of power and ownership in AI development and deployment, discussing ethical solutions, principles, regulations, and frameworks that guide responsible AI development.

Participants will explore equitable AI development practices, including principles and lenses from social justice, regulations, and intersectional benchmarks.

Through the lens of Speculative Design, participants will explore innovative frameworks and tools for envisioning potential futures. The course highlights the role of storytelling and aesthetics in creating compelling narratives about future scenarios. It focuses on exploring the evolving human-machine relationships, prompting participants to consider the ethical and societal impacts of emerging technologies.

Designing Intelligent and Immersive Spaces

Transforming physical spaces into dynamic, interactive environments is at the heart of this module's exploration. Through the integration of modern technology and by combining principles from industrial, graphic, and interactive design with human behavior analysis, architectural planning, and intelligent systems engineering, students will learn to create responsive and immersive spaces.

The course covers the practical application of advanced technologies—including sensors, AI, and augmented reality—in interactive installations and environments, emphasizing how to create meaningful user engagement.

REFRAMING PROCESSES WITH AI AGENTS

Understanding AI agents and their role in business transformation is crucial in today's digital landscape. The course will cover the spectrum of AI agency, from current systems with limited capabilities to future full-fledged agents approximating human agency. Participants will learn about the five key dimensions of agency: adaptability, proactiveness, complexity of goals, complexity of environment, and degree of autonomy. The concept of stateful versus stateless AI agents will be explored, highlighting the importance of context retention in more sophisticated applications.

By the end of this section, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of how AI agents can revolutionize business processes, the potential benefits and risks involved, and the necessary considerations for successful integration of this technology into various industry environments.
